Tennis Stars Donate Funds 185,000 U.S. Dollars To Haiti


The world tennis star on Sunday to raise funds at least 200,000 Australian dollars (185,000 U.S. dollars) for earthquake victims in Haiti charity doubles match, led Setrena Roger Federer and Williams.

Federer held the event at the Rod Laver Arena before the Australian Open, after witnessing the tragic events in the Caribbean nation on television.

"I followed him on television and saw the damage caused by the earthquake," said the Swiss superstar.

"Saturday morning, I think we should do something, I contacted Tennis Australia chief Craig Tiley and say` is it possible? `

"He said probably not.

"I call some players to talk about this and they are willing,` we should be doing. `In 24 hours we were able to finish it."

Federer could take tennis world number one daughter Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Kim Clijsters, Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick and Australian favorite LI; Eyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur.

Meskpun notice too late, tickets may be sold to the 15,000 spectators who packed Rod Laver Arena and each paid 10 dolatr Australia (nine dollars), with implementation done Partners in Health, a charity to help Haiti.

"Tennis Australia did an amazing job in promoting the event in such a short time," added Federer.

"Very impressive view, I feel very happy event so successful."

Tiley said that was too early to count the money that was collected, but most are not numbered at least 200,000 dollars (185,000 U.S. dollars).

According Pemwerintah Haiti, the last victim killed at least 50,000 people, and 1.5 million people lost their homes, but the possibility of even greater casualties.

Previous estimates 100,000 people have died.
