World Cup Stadium Cape Town Ready for Use

Greenpoint Stadium in South Africa, which was chosen as a semi-final 2010 World Cup, Monday declared ready for use.

"The value of waiting is over. The people of Cape Town, this is our stadium, which is ready for the World Cup," said Mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato, when he officially opened the stadium's use.

Stadium capacity is 68,000 spectators icon Table Mountain and the historic Robin Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned once.

Construction of the stadium for 32 months tinged with workers on strike and loud opposition from the environmentalists, who said the stadium's construction will damage the beauty of the city's sights.

Greenpoint is worth 4.5 million rand (605 million dollars) and one of the 10 stadiums where World Cup matches in 2010.

Other stadiums have been completed and restored including Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban and the Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg d, as quoted by AFP.
