President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expects Indonesia to finish among the top three at the South East Asian Games in Laos next month.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Andi Alifian Malarangeng said Tuesday the President wanted the national team to make amends for its below-par performance in the latest SEA Games in 2007, when Indonesia finished a record low fourth.
“The President sent this message to give the national athletes a morale boost they need to compete at the SEA Games and hoist the national flag in Laos,” Andi said.
Indonesia will field 341 athletes who will compete in 22 sports during the biennial event, to be held for the first time in Laos.
Andi said the government had allocated Rp 20 billion to provide cash bonuses to medal winning athletes and was ready to dig deeper if more athletes secured medals.
Indonesia dominated the regional event between 1977 and 1997.
